Your Job Duties
As a dental technician, you will work in a laboratory setting, creating prosthetic pieces for patients. For example, you may make dentures, bridges, and other mouthpieces that are made to fit each patient perfectly. This job requires a lot of skill and attention to detail, so your training is very important for satisfied patients. There are several different people who work to fill the prescription for the mouthpiece.
The dental technician, however, is the person who initially receives the prescription. You are the person in charge of creating the mold for their piece, using either a traditional mold or new technology that sends a digital image of the person’s mouth. Technology is advancing very rapidly, making your training a vital part of this career path.
Training
As a dental technician, you will need to complete a course at a college or university to work in this position. You may attend any college with a technician program, and you will need to complete the course requirements for your college, including some basic courses in mathematics and composition.
